We arrived in Christchurch and were met with a lovely sign saying Welcome Sarah & Ryan held up by Ethan, the son of my cousins cousin! Darren is my American cousins cousin and we stayed with him and his wife Sadie. Their hospitality was great and it was fab to stay in their en suite guestroom and have a home cooked BBQ meal. We had a lovely time hanging out with them in their gorgeous house and we are staying with them again on our return to Christchurch. Ryan and I were both playing water pistol in the garden and Ryan even had a go on their trampoline - he's such a big kid.
Darren dropped us off at the campervan depot. The company we booked through had provided the wrong van, it was larger and petrol instead of the diesel one we wanted. We were concerned about the extra cost of petrol and the usage as this was a bigger van so after a chat with the company we got a $300 discount.
We headed straight to a supermarket and I loved being able to plan meals and buy stuff - not having to choose from a menu again. Off we headed west to Lake Tekapo passing some amazing sites on route. The rivers were turquoise, so stunning and the scenery was beautiful. We pulled in a picnic area to stop for lunch (a home made sandwich) and then pushed on until we reached the lake. It was amazing... you have to see it to believe it. The sun was so hot also and it stayed light so late around 10pm and the sun is scorching still up to 9pm. You could get burnt still at this time! Its crazy.
We stayed that night on a motor camp site which meant we hooked up to power and it had a kitchen, bbq, loo's and showers. We bbq'd some lamb sausages that night and watched the great sunset across the lake.
Next morning we organised breakfast and then got on the road, we passed through lovely little towns on our way to Mount Cook.
