For those who are not aware Ko Phi Phi (pronounced pee pee) was the location of the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach. And it was in this film you saw beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise seas. The film was not wrong. The island of Ko Phi Phi Don is stunning, huge cliffs reaching far from the sea bed showered with gorgeous green trees and plants. The main resort is located on a very narrow section of the island and this was the part that was devastated by the Tsunami as the water easily could travel from one beach to the other across the resort. The width was only about 400m and only about 3m higher than sea level so it didn't really stand a chance.
So as we expected, there is a great deal of construction still going on, but we managed to find a nice room (although pricey $30 / night) as it was peak season. But we knew our budget accommodation would come to an end so we tried to make the most of what this amount bought us - a fan and a TV with some really rubbish US films to amuse us, and hot water which is quite rare for us.
The resort was fairly busy with a young crowd, the little town is filled with many dive companies, lots of Thai massage places (which I took advantage of) tattoo artists, market shops, bars and restaurants and a great deal of Europeans - mainly Swedish & French.
On the first night, we found a great pizza place (in fact it was opposite our room so wasn't hard to find) where they did fab pizza's with blue cheese (I was in heaven) and we even had wine with dinner (a rarity to find within budget and that wasn't paint stripper). The first night was fairly low key.
Day 2 and we walked over to Long beach which was another resort option, much quieter but lovely all the same. We stayed there whilst a small downpour occurred and then headed back for our second night were we thought we would step up the partying a notch - so we headed to Hippies bar for happy hour and their advertised Fire Dance - local talent playing with fire in the form of baton twirling, fire balls on chains.. it was amazing and mesmerising. We met 2 nice guys from Cardiff (Wales) who were here on holiday and bought us a beer. We stayed out until tiredness took over at 2.15am and were sadly unable to find a kebab so made do with a cheese and ham toastie.
The next day we decided to spend lazing on the beach, hired some sun chairs & parasol for the day and prepared to chill. However the weather had other plans and it chucked it with rain, but we were happy to sit under our umbrella watching the world go by.
Another night of pizza (it was really good) and we decided to leave for Ko Lanta the next day mainly as the cost of staying was becoming too much. Tickets in hand we boarded the boat at 11am ready for another sea journey to another island surrounded by emerald waters.. oh life here is pretty tough!
