Siem Reap

We left Phnom Pehn on an early bus - 6.45am ready to take the 6 hour trip to Siem Reap which is located very near the Angkor Wat and many other Wat's. Wats are the ancient temples. We arrived around 12.30 and headed to our guest house that the travel agent set up. We were quoted $4 but it ended up being $6 / night - oh well! The room was nice and had a TV with very poor reception. But the roof top restaurant was nice and did beers for $0.50 so we were happy. (really this trip is not just based around us buying cheap beer if its starting to sound like that!!)

We walked out into the sizzling heat of the day to explore the town, we found a lovely little 24hr supermarket so took some refreshments with us for our walk and headed into the undercover market. They have stalls selling all sorts of items from beautiful silk bags, cushion covers, scarves to food, electrical items and fake trousers and tops. I could spend a lot of money there but only have a small backpack !

We met up with a Tuk-Tuk driver where we arranged our trip the next day to the Wat's and then headed back for sunset at our rooftop. We went out looking for food (ok and a beer) on bar street - which looks like you have stumbled into some ropey Spanish holiday resort. Its just loud bar after bar along a pedestrianised street. We had one drink at the aptly named Angkor What ! and then went in search of food. Given we are on a budget some places here were more pricey so we headed to a line of street stall sellers instead. I had a fabulous beef with onion in a spicy pepper sauce with rice for $1! Perfect. We went back to our place for a cheap beer and some more free internetting. The bar was so loud given there were only about 10 people in it, including some v. drunk Irish people. As we went to bed we could hear the bar from within our earplugs - great! However we did seem to fall asleep quickly - I guess given the time we have been away we are now used to sleeping in noise.

By the way, I really appreciate your food descriptions, seeing as how I tend to travel on my stomach so your blog is telling me what I want to hear!
